“God is our nearest relative.” This is the opening sentence of the book, Our Own God, by G. D. Watson and this is the sentence which met the eyes of Edwin Harvey as he thumbed through this book in a friend’s home in Northern Ireland, many years ago. Edwin, co-author of Kneeling We Triumph, the They Knew Their God series, and many other books published by Harvey Christian Publishers, became immediately enthralled and immediately proceeded to read Our Own God through seven times consecutively.

The effect of this book upon him was astounding. To put it in his own words: “I felt like going into the street and buttonholing the nearest passerby and exclaiming: ‘Do you know what a wonderful God we have?’ It is little wonder that soon Our Own God was added to the list of books published by M. O. V. E. Press, a forerunner of Harvey Christian Publishers. Soon other books by Watson followed in its wake: Pure Gold, Pot of Oil, Soul Food, Steps to the Throne, White Robes, Bridehood Saints, and God’s First Words. All of these are excellent book, but to Edwin Harvey and many other Watson readers, Our Own God remained a favorite.

Books other than those written by Edwin and Lillian Harvey

Harvey Christian Publishers do publish other books besides those written by Edwin and Lillian Harvey. Most of these are reprints such as the books by G. D. Watson, George Bowen, and Gerhardt Tersteegen. Then we do have several books written by contemporaries of the Harveys. These include a book by Emil Kremer, Eyes Opened, a book by a Welsh evangelist, Robert Cox called Elisha, and several by John Wright Follette whose most well known is Broken Bread. Other books include Missing the Way by Patricia St. John, well known British children’s author, several autobiographies–Striking Incidents by Breeden, Amanda Smith, and William Carvosso. Blessing the Church? by Clifford Hill, and the Letters of John Fletcher.

Nuggets From Ephesians

Nuggets From Ephesians.
Edwin and Lillian Harvey, joint authors of many books published by Harvey Christian Publishers, are now in their Heavenly Rest. They leave behind a priceless legacy in their books. Edwin passed away in 1983 and several years prior to Lillian’s decease in 2008, she was incapable of continuing her writing and compiling. However, some old friends and former co-workers worked painstakingly together and culled material on the book of Ephesians from the Harvey files which, over the years, had been the source of most of their books. Culling, sorting, editing–the work was enormous and daunting but eventually Nuggets from Ephesians, Volumes One and Two, were completed. They are now available on Harvey Christian Publishers’ Online Bookstore.

Novels Published by Harvey Christian Publishers

Five novels have been published by Harvey Christian Publishers who generally specialize in devotional books and biographies of past saints. Some of our readers do not agree with novel reading and there is certainly a danger when Christians read fiction to the exclusion of more substantive books. However, I think most would agree that fiction has played an important part in the history of our civilization and has done much to influence the moral tone of our nation both positively and negatively.


“The King’s Diamond” was the first novel to be published by Harvey Christian Publishers and was written by my mother, Lillian G. Harvey. I remember how the book began. It was a hot sultry day in the middle of the summer vacation. I was thirteen and bored so Mother told me to get out my pen and write what she would dictate. In the next half hour, I had written the opening pages of what would become “The King’s Diamond,” in which a rich diamond merchant from South Africa sets out on a search for a human diamond which he is skeptical he will never find. He is mistaken, however, and does eventually find a young woman who passes all the tests he usually puts to diamonds. But there is one snag–she is a Christian. He is not. And so his newly discovered gem seems totally out of reach.
Years later, I followed in my mother’s steps and in 2005 penned my first novel, “The Velvet Curtain.” This was succeeded by two others in the Velvet Curtain Series and then came the novel “Love me and let me go.” All these five novels may be purchased in Harvey Christian Publisher’s Online Bookstore.

Edwin & Lillian Harvey compilations

Why are many of Edwin and Lillian Harvey’s books considered unique by many who read them? I think their uniqueness lies largely in the fact that many of these books are compilations.In one fairly small volume, you can read what some of the most godly men and women have had to say on subjects such as prayer, the importance of God’s Word, the power of the Spirit, the unity of Christ’s body and many others. These quotations lead the reader to the book from which they are quoted and many have said that, in this way, they have been introduced into a new world of biography where saints of the past become friends and mentors who encourage the reader to press forward in the Christian life, regardless of the odds against them.


These compilations were made possible by use of the Harveys’ extensive files. Lillian Harvey experienced long and frequent bouts of bronchitis in the damp British winters and would be forced to spend days, even weeks in bed. This meant she had ample time to read and, if something blessed her, she would mark the passage, and, in the early days, later type it out if it were from a book or cut it if it were from a magazine, and then file the clipping away. Later the photocopying machine made this process so much easier and gradually, a room full of files were collected—biographical, topical, and textual. From these came books such as “Kneeling We Triumph,” “Soul Sculpture,” “The Call Back Series,” “Royal Insignia,” and many others. Biographies, too, such as the “They Knew Their God Series,” and the “How They Prayed Series,” were also derived from researching these files.

Foreign Translations

Translations.
Manly of Edwin and Lillian Harvey’s books have been translated into Romanian, Russian, and now Spanish. Over the years,several have also been translated into French, Polish and the Czech language. In visiting both Russia and Romania, I observed that often much was “lost in translation.” The manuscripts were checked and rechecked but rarely by someone whose native language was English. As many of our books contained quotations from writers of past centuries, I realized that if I were to check the translations of our books before publication, I might help preserve the original meaning. This meant, of course, knowing the foreign language reasonably well.


Over the years, I have spent hours looking over translations and find it very rewarding when I can work side by side with the translator to produce a book which is not only an easy-to-read translation, but preserves both the meaning and spirit of the original text. Sometimes I have aggravated the translators by comments and acknowledge that perhaps at times I was over-particular but generally it has been appreciated that I take the time to do this. Some of the best translators are the easiest to work with and are eager to learn more of our English idioms in the process while I have profited immensely from reading our books in a foreign language.

Asking Father, Edwin and Lillian Harvey

Asking Father
We all lose things, especially as we get older. Children, too, not only lose things but are often inconsolable when they do. And then, to be accused of stealing the lost item, that is misery upon misery! In “Asking Father,” written by Edwin and Lillian Harvey, there is a story of just such a situation and how, through the prayer of faith uttered by a little girl the whole situation was turned around.
“Asking Father” is full of practical examples of how prayer changed things. Written for children, these stories inspire hope and trust in a God Who knows every detail of our lives. We live in a day when our faith needs renewal. Many Sunday School teachers as well as parents, have used this book to teach lessons in prayer. Isn’t “No” an answer?, Asking Father

We all want quick answers to our prayers but I think most of us realize pretty early on in our Christian walk that God works to a different “time-clock” than we do. For me, at least, it is much harder to accept the fact that sometimes His answers actually seem to spell “No” to our requests and that is a bitter pill to swallow.
In “Asking Father” written by Edwin and Lillian Harvey, there is a story entitled Isn’t “No” an answer? This tells of how Amy Carmichael, the now famous missionary and writer, asked God when a child to have her brown eyes replaced by blue. To her dismay, she awoke the next morning to find that her Father had not answered her prayer. She was to be stuck with brown eyes for the rest of her life. However, she also discovered that, had God answered her request, she would not have been able to rescue the temple children for blue eyes would have given her away immediately.

The Velvet Curtain by Trudy Harvey Tait

Are the characters in your novel, “The Velvet Curtain” people you have actually known? This is a question I get asked fairly frequently and I suppose,like many writers, I would have to answer “Yes” and “No.” The two sisters, Esther and Gabby were originally based on two Romanian girls I had come to know pretty well, but as “The Velvet Curtain” progressed, Esther became less and less like the original girl I had in mind. Gabby, on the other hand, stayed pretty true to form although she did a great many things that the real “Gabby” (that was not her name, of course) never did. But in character, the fictional and the real greatly resembled one another.


The other characters resembled “types” of people I had known. Larry, in “Behind the Velvet Curtain,” the second in “The Velvet Curtain Series,” was the most difficult of all my characters to make come alive. My family told me that I caricatured him because he lived in a totally different world from the one in which I had been brought up and so I could not enter into his mindset as I had for most of the other characters. Well, I tried to do just that and found it almost impossible. Ramona, also, posed somewhat of the same problem. I trust, however, that due to good advice and a lot of hard work and prayer, each character does come to life.

The Call Back Series by Edwin and Lillian Harvey

I can remember when my parents, Edwin and Lillian Harvey, first began “The Call Back Series.” It was at a time when the “Health and Wealth Gospel” was dominating the religious printed press and the media. Everywhere you turned, it seemed you confronted some aspect of this “Gospel.” And not only that. It was not infrequent to come across Christians whose lives had been devastated by this prosperity cult. Why had they not been healed they asked themselves? Why had they been allowed to suffer loneliness and frustration or encountered opposition as they followed the Christ of the Gospels?

If they were true Christians, wouldn’t God prosper them and protect them? Bombarded by the idea that Christians should prosper and overcome all health problems, they would be plunged into despair. Suicidal impulses were not uncommon in some of these sincere saints. They must have sinned, they reasoned, or they would have been healed.
And so Edwin and Lillian decided to research saints of the past and see what testimony they had to tell. Thus the “Call Back Series,” evolved. Many of God’s children had not been miraculously healed, had not been phenomenally prosperous, had not enjoyed unqualified popularity. But they had gained much from their trials and they call back to us today to tell us that if they made it triumphantly to the end of their Christian journey, then we can do.
