The Harvey Files, MOVE, Message of Victory

Many of us have some sort of filing cabinet in our possession. We may be in the habit of filing away past letters especially if we run a home business. We file away past tax forms, legal documents, drawings and letters of our children when young—the list could go on and on. For a few of us, however, filing is more than a pastime—it is a business, you could almost say, an obsession. This was true of my mother, Lillian Harvey, who, over the years, built up a room full of filing cabinets in which were stored thousands of clippings, articles, and sermons from a wide variety of books and magazines. Years ago, when spending most of the winter in bed on account of severe bronchitis attacks, mother read avidly and began to set aside passages which would touch her heart. These she eventually would file away under topics, or by Scriptural passages, or under biographical headings.

Then, one day, she and her husband, Edwin, were reading together when several verses 12 and 13 from Psalm 48 struck them forcibly: “Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof. Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.” This seemed to them a word from the Lord especially for them—the towers, bulwarks and palaces represented the church fathers; reformers; missionaries; pastors; authors and martyrs of past generations. Edwin and Lillian were to preserve their stories, their exhortations, their examples for the present generation and generations to come. True, many readers might have heard of these saints, but only vaguely and some not at all. By compiling books from their files, Edwin and Lillian would be able not only to bless the reader with the quotations used, but introduce them to the books from which these clippings had been taken.

And so Kneeling We Triumph Vols. One and Two; The Christian’s Daily Challenge; The Royal Series; Soul Sculpture and many others were painstakingly compiled and printed and are still available in the Online Christian Bookstore of Harvey Christian Publishers.

Missing the Way, Patricia St. John, Missionary to Morocco

Patricia St. John, author and former missionary to Morocco, is well known for her children’s books. Treasures of the Snow, Tanglewoods’ Secrets, Star of Light, to mention just a few, have been read and treasured in many Christian homes both in Great Britain and here in the USA. Patricia also wrote biographies and various other helpful devotional books.

The small book Missing the Way, however is less known and is published by Harvey Christian Publishers. In its forty-two pages, the author focuses on the statement found in Hebrews 3:19: “They could not enter in,” and covers a lot of ground. In seven short chapters, she brings to the readers’ attention six reasons why many of the Children of Israel forfeited entering into Canaan, their promised land: “Murmuring—The Sin of the People”; “Jealousy—The Sin of the Leaders”; “Unbelief—The Sin of the People”; “Pride—The Sin of the Levites”; “Spiritual Depression—The Sin of the Leader”; “Impatience—The Sin of the Leaders”, and finally ends with “The Remedy.”

Let My People Go, Edwin F. Harvey

Edwin F. Harvey, co-author of many of the books published by Harvey Christian Publishers, passed away December, 1983. After his death, his wife, Lillian, began collecting many of his editorials and articles as he was editor for many years of the periodical, The Message of Victory, published in Great Britain where Edwin resided for many years. This collection is called Let My People Go, which was the title of a series of articles which focus on the need of God’s people being liberated from many things which bind them and hinder their spiritual development. The compilations, Edwin and Lillian Harvey

Compilations can be intriguing; compilations can be boring; compilations can be most helpful; compilations can be rather confusing; compilations can be off-putting; compilations can be awesome. It all depends on who did the compiling and what material was available.
The compilations published by Harvey Christian Publishers and available in their Online Christian Bookstore were put together by Edwin and Lillian Harvey. Years ago when living in the north of England, Lillian suffered severe bronchitis every winter which confined her to bed for days if not weeks at a time.

Never able to be idle, she read profusely from Christian magazines and books and marked and set aside passages which inspired her. Then, gradually, she filed away these clippings and soon amassed a great variety of material all neatly categorized under the headings: biographical, topical, and Scriptural. It is from these files that she and her husband began to compile books on prayer, suffering, the importance of the Christian home; humility, the Word of God etc. etc. These books have been a great blessing to many for in them a host of voices from varying time-periods, cultures, and denominational backgrounds, all focus in on the same subject, each adding his or her weight and experience until the reader becomes convinced that prayer is important; that suffering can be turned to blessing; that the Christian home should become the center of family worship; and that humility is the badge of every true follower of Christ.

Books on Prayer, Kneeling We Triumph

We of Harvey Christian Publishers are proud to present seven books dedicated to the subject of prayer. We are aware that there are many books on this subject currently available on today’s market, but ours are unique in that they contain many voices from different time periods, cultures, and denominational backgrounds, all harmonizing to present the same message: prayer is essential to the believer; prayer links us to our Creator and Sustainer and is our veritable lifeline at all times, in all places, and under every circumstance.

Each of these seven books were written or compiled jointly by Edwin F. Harvey and his wife Lillian. Royal Exchange was the first to be published. It is a compilation and contains a reading for every day of the month. Kneeling We Triumph Volumes One and Two, soon followed. They are also compilations and each volume has sixty challenging readings on prayer. Then came the three-volume series How They Prayed which are biographical sketches illustrating how God’s children, some well known, some lesser known, have prayed in various types of situations and for a variety of reasons. The first volume deals with how family members prayed one for another. The second concentrates on pastors and preachers and their prayers for their congregations while the third tells of how revivals both at home and abroad were brought about through prayer. The last of these seven books is Asking Father, a book written for children to illustrate how God answers the prayers of boys and girls when they come to their Heavenly Father with their petitions.

They Knew Their God Book Four, Edwin and Lillian Harvey

As in the other volumes in the They Knew Their God Series written by Edwin and Lillian Harvey, the men and women in this book are from a variety of eras, cultures, and denominational backgrounds. The first sketch presents us with the commentators Philip and Matthew Henry whose lives spanned the years 1631-1714. Philip began his ministry as an Anglican priest but refused to sign the Act of Uniformity and so became a non-conformist. The second and third sketches cover the lives of American Methodists Freeborn and Catherine Garretson, both born in the mid eighteenth century. Next comes John Gossner, a Roman Catholic priest from Bavaria who eventually and rather reluctantly became Protestant in order to have more freedom to preach the Word.

After Gossner comes John Hunt, an English Methodist who became a missionary to Fiji. Elizabeth Prentiss, an American Presbyterian follows Gossner. She was the daughter of Dr. Edward Payson and author of Stepping Heavenward. The seventh sketch introduces us to the Englishman, Lord Radstock, who ministered to the aristocracy of Russia and through whose ministry, the subject of the next sketch, the German infidel Frederick Baedeker, was converted to Christianity and who also served God in Russia. Irish born Frank Crossley follows Baedeker. Businessman, philanthropist, and preacher, Crossley’s sacrificial life had such an effect on the city of Manchester, that when he died, the Manchester Guardian commented: “Had Mr. Crossley lived in ancient times he would have been a prophet; had he lived in the Middle Ages he would have been a saint somewhat after the style of Francis of Assisi; living in the end of the nineteenth century, he was and remains a witness to the reality of those things to which the prophet and saint bore witness.” P. 154) Two women follow Crossley: the first is his wife Emily and the second, Baroness Von Wrede from Finland who became known as “Angel of the Prisons.” The thirteenth and last sketch in this book is about Henrietta Soltau, an Englishwoman and adherent of the Christian Brethren.

They Knew Their God Book Five, Edwin and Lillian Harvey

The first four volumes in They Knew Their God Series were written by Edwin and Lillian Harvey. Even although Edwin passed away in 1983, his wife continued to use much of the material they had prepared together before his death. The last two volumes, however, do not have Edwin’s name on them.

Volume Five has twelve sketches, and like its predecessors, these sketches span the centuries beginning with the life of English poet and Anglican Priest, George Herbert who was born in 1593. The second sketch presents Miguel Molinos to the readers. Molinos was a Spaniard whose writings were to influence many Christian leaders, John Wesley among them. Molinos is followed by Joseph Alleine, another Anglican minister who is best known as author of the book, “An Alarm to the Unconverted.” Next comes the saintly John Fletcher, Vicar of Madely and close associate of John Wesley, followed by his wife, Mary. In the sixth sketch, we read of Lutheran pastor, John Frederick Oberlin from Strasbourg, who labored for God in the French Alps. Samuel Pollard follows Oberlin. Pollard grew up in Cornwall and became a missionary to China. The Scottish Presbyterian minister and hymn-writer, George Matheson, comes next, followed by Canadian missionaries to China, Jonathan and Rosalind Goforth, also Presbyterian. For the last two sketches, we go to England and read of Salvationist Kate Lee, and William Scroggie, author and Keswick speaker.

They Knew Their God Book Six, Lillian Harvey

The last two volumes in the They Knew Their God Series are written by Lillian Harvey. The previous four, Lillian co-authored with her husband who passed away in 1983. Volume Six was the last book Lillian ever wrote although she left some material for the seventh and what she intended would be the final book in this series. I hope, one day, to complete this final volume.

They Knew Their God Volume Six has fourteen sketches, and like its predecessors, these sketches span the centuries, and in fact, the opening sketch is the earliest of all the sketches in this series. It is about John Chrysostom, one of the early Church Fathers, who was born in 347 in Syria and was known as “The Golden Mouth” on account of his oratorical skills. From the fourth century, we jump to the eighteenth in the second sketch which tells the story of Scotsman John Brown, who began life as a cowherd but became known to posterity as one of the ablest of theologians and Bible commentators. John was a member of the Secession Branch of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. From Brown we turn to Charles Simeon, Anglican minister in Cambridge, England, whose godly life and teaching influenced many students, one being Henry Martyn, who is the subject of the next sketch. Henry became Simeon’s curate for a while before setting sail as missionary to India and Persia. He died at age thirty-one. The next sketch takes us to the beginning of the twentieth century and tells the story of Helen Ewan, the young university student from Glasgow, Scotland, who died before graduating but whose brief life influenced many throughout Great Britain. From Helen we jump over two centuries and read of Edward Payson, Harvard graduate and minister in the Congregational Church of America. Then, following Payson, we have James Turner, Scottish fisherman and preacher. Next, we read of Englishman Thomas Waring, who became a missionary to Africa. The ninth sketch tells us of another missionary, Anthony Norris Groves, who became a member of the Plymouth Brethren and brother-in-law to George Muller. Groves’ wife Mary, is the subject of the next sketch. The eleventh chapter is centered around the life of William Wilberforce, well known English reformer and philanthropist. The next sketch tells the story of John Pierpont, tutor, attorney, merchant and finally, minister of a Congregational church which finally evicted him on account of his stand on temperance. His grandson was the well known businessman and philanthropist, John Pierpont-Morgan. In the thirteenth sketch we travel to Germany and read of Johann Christoph Blumhardt, “the pastor who confronted devils,” among other things and influenced whole communities through his prayerful living and dauntless courage. Finally, in the last sketch, we turn to American E. M. Bounds, well known author of many books on prayer and one time pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
