Kneeling We Triumph Volume One: Hold God’s s Character True

We, as Christians, often hold a distorted conception of faith which is far from the Biblical original. In Kneeling We Triumph Volume One, Edwin and Lillian Harvey have brought many aspects of prayer to our attention. One of these is the necessity of a total faith in God and in His promises to us which is a prerequisite to effectual prayer. The following quotations, taken from the writings or sermons of God’s saints, emphasize this truth:

“To aim aright at the liberty of the children of God requires a continual acting of faith—of a naked faith in a naked promise or declaration. By a naked faith in a naked promise I do not mean a bare assent that God is faithful, and that such a promise in the Book of God may be fulfilled in me, but rather a bold, hearty, steady, venturing of my soul, body, and spirit upon the truth of the promise with an appropriating ACT!”

We sometimes limit prayer to words we mouth to God through our lips. “The prayers of upright Christians are without ceasing,” Martin Luther tells us, “though they pray not always with their mouth, yet their hearts do pray continually; for the sigh of a true Christian is prayer.”

O instruct us how to pray!

And stir us up to seek Thy face.

Kneeling We Triumph Volume One: Be Still and Know…..

“The world is enough to busy us, not to fill us,” says Thomas Watson. If this is true, then why are we Christians often so busy and so empty? Why do we prefer the hubbub of activity to silence? Or to put it more forcibly: why are we so fearful of silence? Are we afraid of God’s voice which we can sometimes only hear when other voices are hushed? Or are we unwilling to confront our own thoughts which take control when we are quiet? Or do we wish to drown out our accusing conscience which takes advantage of the quiet? Whatever the reasons, over-busyness often prevents us communing with the Almighty, and is therefore an enemy to the healing power that silent meditation and prayer inevitably works in our hectic lives.


In Kneeling We Triumph, Volume One by Edwin and Lillian Harvey, there are several readings on this subject. Oliver G. Wilson, editor of Wesleyan Methodist for many years, relates an interesting experience in his own life:
“For some time, things had not been going satisfactorily according to my poor limited vision. World situations were distressing and far beyond any solution that I had to offer. Business was not going as in my judgment it should go. I felt keenly that I had been taken advantage of, and spent much of the night turning restlessly in bed. Tensions, frustrations, impossible situations, disagreement among trusted friends, all plagued me. At the close of the second day, when night had settled and nature was putting itself to bed, there came from memory this portion of the Psalm learned long years ago, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’
“It came with such force, with emphasis upon each word such as no man could give it; my heart melted. A song, seasoned with happy tears, was sung within my soul: ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ Very much of our trouble and anxiety arises from our useless chatter, from our ceaseless activity, from our reliance upon our own wisdom. We have a guilty feeling if religion is not doing something. We want progress, but back of progress must be peace. One does not need a brass band to appreciate God. His mercy, His grace, His presence, when realized, overwhelm us.”

Be still sometimes—so still that God may speak,
And make His voice heard in thy waiting heart.
Sometimes the hush of His calm presence seek;

Kneeling We Triumph Volume One: Man’s Strange Reluctance to Commune

At Harvey Christian Publishers’ Online Bookstore you will find some inspiring, in-depth books on prayer. The first of these to be published was Kneeling We Triumph Volumes One and Two. These are compilations—60 short and to the point readings in each volume, which may be treated as daily devotionals. They have been used in seminars and by church prayer-groups and are challenging as well as inspirational.
In a reading in Kneeling We Triumph Volume One entitled “Man’s strange reluctance to commune,” the authors, Edwin and Lillian Harvey include a quotation from F. J. Huegel, a chaplain in World War I. He later served as a missionary in Mexico City.

Through hard lessons learned by life experience, he shares the following truths with us:
“True prayer can only be inaugurated on the basis of ‘co-crucifixion.’ This is the prime condition: ‘If ye abide in Me and I in you, ye shall ask whatsoever ye will and it shall be done unto you.’ We must be ‘in Christ.’ But we cannot be in Christ in the fullest sense, without that we commit to death, in the power of the Savior’s death, the ‘old-life.’
“It is when we realize our oneness with Christ in death and in resurrection, that prayer becomes the marvelous force that we find it was in the life of the Savior, the invincible dynamic that it reveals itself to be in the book of Acts, and the ineffable experience of the great saints of the ages. It is then that our spirits, liberated by the power of the Cross from the fleshly and the soulish entanglements, ‘mount up on wings as eagles.’ It is then that communion with the infinitely adorable One Who inhabiteth Eternity comes spontaneously and naturally to its fullest expression. It is then that the injunction, ‘Pray without ceasing,’ ceases to be an unintelligible command; for the spirit released from the thralldom of the ‘flesh-life,’ and freed from all Satanic oppression by an appropriation of the full benefits of the Calvary victory, rises to take its place with Christ in the Heavenlies where prayer is the continuous in-breathing of the life of God. It is then that prayer, energized by the Spirit of the living God, which it cannot be until it is freed from all selfish ingredients, becomes at times a groaning which is unutterable, and which does not fail to move mountains, and achieve the impossible. It is then that prayer becomes a working out of the will of God, and therefore, must prevail, be the difficulties what they may, however staggering the problem, however great the need. It is then that the great disparity between what the Master said that prayer would accomplish, and the miserable caricature that it is in the actual practice of millions is removed, and prayer blossoms out in all the glory of its true nature.”

They Knew Their God Volume 3: She Chose the Good Part

They Knew Their God Volume Three by Edwin and Lillian Harvey, like the other five books in the They Knew Their God series, contains sketches of men and women who served God in their day and generation and whose goal was to know Him intimately. Mary Mozely is one such servant of the Lord. The authors have opened her sketch with the following paragraph:
“Mary Mozley stood on board the Llandovery Castle, waving good bye to friends and relatives. She was about to begin that long voyage which would take her to her chosen mission field. The future was mercifully veiled from the young voyager as she watched the receding shores of her native land.

Little did she realize that she would be given only nine brief years to serve her Savior among the natives of the Congo before being called Home, for she was still in her twenties and life seemed to stretch out ahead. But brief though her life was to be, it would be one filled to the full with learning those lessons which would fit her for her everlasting reign with Christ. When the final call was to come, Mary Mozely would be ready!”
Then that final call came on the 4th of December, early in the morning, Mary, at the early age of thirty 36, was called into the Presence of the One she had served and loved so faithfully. The closing paragraph of the sketch puts it like this:
“She would not be greeting a stranger for she had often met Him and thus come to know Him through the medium of His Word and prayer. He whose spirit beats a path of prayer daily to the Throne of Grace is not in danger of losing his way in the emergencies of life. The sustaining grace of her Lord Jesus Christ had nurtured Mary through varied circumstances, and now was at her side when she passed beyond the vale of time into the presence of the King.”

Daily Readings available for the New Year

Who among us has not used a daily devotional book at some time or other in our lives? And there is much to choose from.The Christian’s Daily Challenge published by Harvey Christian Publishers is an example of a daily devotional which has been blessed to many Christians throughout the world.

It is unique in that, being a compilation, the quotations used are vehicles for past saints to speak to us each day. Poems, exhortations, testimonies—they are all there, covering the importance of prayer, of reading Scripture, of enduring tribulation, of obeying God’s call—the subjects are varied and challenging.
Monthly devotionals, however, are not perhaps as common or as widely used. Royal Purposes, Royal Exchange, and Royal Counsel are also compilations, containing thirty-one readings, each booklet dealing with a particular subject namely: the purposes of God in suffering, prayer, and the necessity of reading the Bible consistently and often. Royal Insignia is a fourth book in this series. It has ninety-eight two-page readings on the subject of humility.

Kneeling We Triumph Vol. 1: Prayer—our method not our message.

“Prayer is not our message; it is the method of God for the message.” This is the opening statement of the first reading in Kneeling We Triumph Vol. 1. in which many of God’s saints are quoted on the subject of prayer. Edwin and Lillian Harvey, who compiled this book and its companion Kneeling We Triumph Vol. 2, quote from a variety of sources which span centuries and denominations.


The above statement comes from the pen of Armin Gesswein who was a Lutheran pastor who visited the Bethlehem Congregation in Oslo, Norway in the early 1930′s., where what was known as “the Great Revival” had broken out. He stayed there two years and met his wife-to-be who was converted during the revival. Returning eventually to America, Armin was never the same. He traveled from coast to coast speaking on prayer and revival and is best known as the founder and director of Revival Prayer Fellowship Inc. and Ministers’ Prayer Fellowship. One of Armin’s frequent sayings was “When Jesus went back to heaven, all He left behind was a prayer meeting.”
Armin was passionate about the importance of prayer in the Christian’s life. He writes:
“Our generation has yet to see prayer as a ministry, and to take God at His Word on this subject. It is while we pray that God works, if we can but see Him—not merely before, or after prayer. Our idea is, “Let us pray, and then get on with the work.” But prayer is our real work. We so often think of prayer as a prefix or a suffix to an otherwise busy.”

Kneeling We Triumph Vol. 1: Prayer is asking God to do what we cannot do.

“Prayer is releasing the energies of God. For prayer is asking God to do what we cannot do,” says George Trumbull. This statement is quoted in Kneeling We Triumph Volume One, compiled by Edwin and Lillian Harvey. This book and its companion, Kneeling We Triumph Volume Two, contain many quotes from God’s saints who served Him in various denominations but who were all convinced “that prayer does “release the energies of God.” George Trumbull was a Congregational pastor who was also professor at various colleges such as Yale, Andover, and Harvard.


In the same reading in which Trumbull is quoted, Oswald Chambers states that “Prayer does not fit us for the greater works; prayer is the greater work.” Scottish born, Chambers gave up a career in art to become a pastor and teacher. He served as a chaplain for the YMCA in Egypt during the First World War and died in Cairo of appendicitis. His writings are extremely thought-provoking as was his whole ministry. His wife, Gertrude, devoted the rest of her life to preserving and putting into print her husband’s many sermons. That is why many of his books are still on the market, the best known of these being My Utmost for His Highest. Read below, more of what Chambers has to say on the subject of prayer:
“We think of prayer as a common-sense exercise of our higher powers in order to prepare us for God’s work. In the teaching of Jesus Christ prayer is the working of the miracle of Redemption in me which produces the miracle of Redemption in others by the power of God. . . . Prayer is the battle; it is a matter of indifference where you are. Whichever way God engineers circumstances, the duty is to pray. Never allow the thought, “I am of no use where I am,” because you certainly can be of no use where you are not. Wherever God has dumped you down in circumstances, pray, ejaculate to Him all the time. “Whatsoever ye ask in My name, that will I do.” We won’t pray unless we get thrills; that is the intensest form of spiritual selfishness. We have to labor along the line of God’s direction, and He says pray. “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest. . . .”
“The great enemy to the Lord Jesus Christ in the present day is the conception of practical work that has not come from the New Testament, but from the systems of the world in which endless energy and activities are insisted upon, but no private life with God. The emphasis is put on the wrong thing. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation . . . for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you,” a hidden, obscure thing. An active Christian worker too often lives in the shop window. It is the innermost of the innermost that reveals the power of the life.
“We have to get rid of the plague of the spirit of the religious age in which we live. In our Lord’s life there was none of the press and rush of tremendous activity that we regard so highly, and the disciple is to be as his Master. The central thing about the kingdom of Jesus Christ is a personal relationship to Himself, not public usefulness to men.”

Tribulation Worketh

For most of us, Christmas will be a Season of joyful giving, receiving, and worshiping. However, there will be some who feel it practically impossible to participate in the Christmas spirit, perhaps on account of personal loss, or trial of various kinds. For such among us, Tribulation Worketh by George Watson may prove a blessing. In it, he talks about the work of suffering in our lives and the blessing it leaves in its wake. In the introduction to this little book, its author has this to say:


“There is a marvelous variety among saints and no book but the Bible is large enough to fit every case. But with most sanctified believers, there is a passage in their lives, sometimes extending over years, which might be called the “Arizona” (a desert state in the United States) of religious life; and as in passing from the rich prairies of the Western states to the evergreen fields of Southern California, the traveler must cross a stretch of dry territory, so between the early and the latter rain there is a period of drought. But be it remembered that this drought is just as essential to the fullness of Christian life as the rain is, and this is what many do not understand. It is the dry spell that tests everything, and puts quality into the harvest which nothing else could. If the soul passes safely through the rainless period and meets the conditions, there will come in due time the latter rain.”

O break my heart; but break it as a field
Is by the plough up-broken for the corn;
O break it as the buds, by green leaf sealed,
Are, to unloose the golden blossom, torn;

Broken Bread

Harvey Christian Publishers have published the book Broken Bread by John Wright Follette. Mr. Follette was a unique thinker and writer and was willing for God to lead him out of “the box” and into a wide panorama of spiritual truth which he imparted to hungry souls in seminars and conferences while living, and he still speaks through his writing to those of us who long for more of Christ’s inexhaustible supplies of grace. Below are some choice quotes from this book:
